In response to Wendy Davis’ announcement that she is running for the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial nomination, GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Pauken issued the following statement:
“I welcome Wendy Davis into the race for governor.
“While I disagree strongly with her liberal views, she is very intelligent and will be a formidable candidate in this race to determine who will be the next governor of the state of Texas.
“Texas Republican voters need to take a close look at who will likely be the best candidate to contrast Ms. Davis’ San Francisco-style Democratic views with the principled conservative positions that win elections.
“My willingness to overhaul the top-down, teach- to-the-test education system and reform the way our state government does business is the best way to challenge the populist campaign rhetoric I expect from Ms. Davis.
“Nominating Greg Abbott, a career politician who will not debate a true conservative or even state his positions on critical issues like education, border security and transportation in Texas, could give Republicans the same sort of run-to-the-middle Mitt Romney-style candidate that loses a sure thing against a full-fledged and clever liberal.”
